Manchester United have been accused of putting their interests in Russia ahead of paying proper tribute to one of their most prominent supporters in Ukraine, who has been tragically murdered by Russian forces.
Shocking details have emerged of the death of Aleksander Kukin, one of the founding members of the Kyiv Reds supporters club, who was shot and killed by Russian invaders while trying to help his wife and daughter flee the war-torn Ukrainian capital.
Kukin's wife, Alina, and daughter were seriously injured in the attack and are now recovering in hospital having undergone surgery. A harrowing picture has been shared of both lying in their hospital beds.
United released an official statement saying the club was 'deeply saddened' by the 25-year-old's death - but instead of saying he had been killed by Russian troops, the club instead said he had been shot dead by 'opposition forces'.
There is no mention of Russia or Russians anywhere in the 363-word statement.
The Twitter account Zorya Londonsk, run by British-Ukrainian journalist Andrew Todos, was one of many who slammed United for failing to attribute Russia as the cause of Kukin's death, and accused the club of 'discrediting their tribute' to their own loyal supporter.
'So so poor from @ManUtd,' read the tweet.
'What on earth is ‘killed by opposition forces' meant to mean?
'Once again Man United (following other clubs) in bring scared of offending their fan base in the isolated aggressor state Russia…
'Really discrediting their tribute to Oleksandr Kukin.'

Another Ukrainian Twitter user, Sergii Koval, said United are 'fear to lose some audience in Russia' if it condemns the country for invading Ukraine.
Mykhailo Mysko, a Ukrainian Manchester United supporter who said he knew Kukin, said on Twitter: 'If @ManUtd had responded adequately, calling things by their names, and was not afraid to lose one of the Russian fans there, and not all these "opposition forces" ... Shame.
'He was killed by the Russian occupiers. That's the way to write. Understood @ManUtd?'

Another user wrote: 'United PR refers to Russian soldiers gunning down innocents as 'opposition forces', they're absolutely f***ing disgusting.'
Michael Yokhin, a European football writer, said: 'This official statement doesn't mention the word "Russia". The man was killed by "opposition forces", according to Manchester United. Also, "Manchester United has repeatedly spread an anti-war message since the outbreak of the fighting in Ukraine." What? A shameful statement.'
Duncan Drasdo, chief executive of the Manchester United Supporters Trust, described Kukin's death as 'sickening'.

Kukin had been instrumental in the formation of the Kyiv Reds group back in 2002 and a recent picture showed him enjoying watching United's 4-2 win over arch-rivals Leeds United on February 20 - just a few weeks before he was murdered.
'You will always be remembered my friend,' Kyiv Reds wrote on Facebook.
