A robot vacuum can keep floors clean enough to reduce the frequency at which you need to manually vacuum. Choose a robot vacuum that is well-trained in navigation, can clean stairs and corners and also has an enormous bin that needs to be emptying every so often.

There are models that clean and charge on their own This feature could be essential for those who have pets or children. The top performers in our tests have decent obstacle avoidance.

1. Roomba iRobot i3+ from iRobot EVO

The i3+ EVO is identical to its sibling i3 EVO. They differ only in that the i3+ comes with self-emptying capabilities. The i3+ is an excellent option for those who want an automated, hands-free cleaning experience, but want to manually empty the robot's dustbin when it is full.

Both robots are adept in removing dirt and dust particles on floors and carpets and are able to move around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates intelligent maps of your home that help the i3+ EVO navigate and clean in a way that maximizes efficiency. However, unlike the i7+ and other top-rated robots that we tested, the i3+ doesn't have a feature for avoiding obstacles, so it may get stuck on things such as socks or power cords, and may have issues in navigating through transitions between surfaces, such as from hardwood to rug.

iRobot recommends you clear out areas where the i3+ EVO will vacuum prior to when you use it, and include getting rid of any clutter or toys it may encounter. It's also recommended to keep the dustbin and filter clean so that they don't become clogged with dirt. If the i3+'s internal bin is empty or the battery is not fully charged, it returns to the docking station and automatically takes the dirt out of the docking station's external dustbin. Then it continues cleaning from where it started. Battery life is about an hour-and-a-half of continuous use. It takes three hours to charge.

2. IRobot Roomba i7+

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the most powerful model in iRobot's flagship line, and it is equipped with the most recent features. It's self-charging and self-navigating, but the most important feature is its auto-emptying bin. This will eliminate the need for routine maintenance.

The Roomba I7+ is able to make rooms more efficient maps using Imprint Smart Mapping. It also works with iRobot Home to schedule cleaning jobs, and you can control your robot via the app or via voice.

The i7+ is more efficient and more agile in our tests than the eufy RoboVac G30. It also picked up large pet hair pieces from all surfaces, including carpeting. The biggest benefit over the eufy, though the dust bin is self-emptying, which eliminates a major source of maintenance and cuts down on recurring costs.

We were also impressed by the i7+'s compatibility with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant AI services. We used these services to instruct the robot to begin or stop cleaning sessions, as well as to move around the room, and vacuum a particular area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. After being connected, to voice commands to the i7+, for example "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options to manage the i7+'s settings and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world full of vacuums that are cordless and are like minivans and buses, this tiny Dyson model feels like an automobile. It's powerful enough to replace a stand-up vacuum in a majority of homes, yet it is also small enough to fit on a coffee table or bookcase.

The V10 is powered with seven cells of energy-dense Lithium-ion batteries that can provide power that is not fading for 60 minutes. Its sophisticated whole-machine filtration system captures allergens and expels cleaner air back into your home. Its specialized head uses stiff nylon bristles to penetrate into carpets and collect large crumbs or fine dust. It has three suction modes to meet the task at hand. It is able to quickly change between handheld and floor vacuum and vice versa.

The model also comes with an accessory dock that can charge to 100% in around 3.5 hours, and gives users easy access to two attachments and the wand clip. This is a big improvement over the older Dysons models, which take a long time to charge and are a pain to store.

The V10's biggest drawback is its limited run time. Its claims on the market that it can provide up to 60 minutes of run time are misleading, as CR's testing shows. This is a standard, not exceptional, battery-powered cordless vacuum's run time. This is still enough to get rid of the majority of an average-sized house but not long enough to cover every area (though a second run-through usually can be effective). This model has its own advantages however: it's lighter and more maneuverable than earlier Dysons cordless models, and its vacuuming ability is noticeably superior on carpets with low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

One of the most well-known robot vacuums, the 694 is a basic model that's an excellent choice for people who don't want to spend too much on a robotic. It's capable of sucking up most kinds of debris in our tests, and it frequently goes over the same areas many times to give a thorough clean. Its flat front side helps it to reach into corners and along the edges of walls, which is a nice addition.

Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt technology to stay clear of obstacles and navigate your home. However, it lacks the capabilities for mapping of more advanced models, including our top picks, the i3+EVO and j7+ Series. It is prone to getting stuck on phone cords or furniture and will often run out of power before returning to its original location.

The Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum is superior to the Roomba 694 in all aspects, as it has fewer parts that need regular cleaning and is equipped with an allergen-trapping HEPA filter, has lower recurring costs, comes with more advanced automation capabilities and is more efficient in maneuvering itself. It also has a bigger dustbin and charges quicker.

The eufy RoboVac X8 has a superior battery life than the Roomba. It also comes with physical boundaries strips that can be controlled using your smartphone's voice assistance. It is also more robust, has a more powerful motor, and is more effective on low-pile and bare floors.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a name that you see on all sorts of electronic gadgets for your home, so it comes as no surprise that they're one of the most reputable mop and robot hoover vacuum manufacturers. Jet Bot AI+ has the most advanced onboard technology to navigate and avoid obstacles.

The app provides a range of options for customizing your robotic floor scrubber cleaner. These include mopping levels, virtual barriers and behavior modifications docking frequency settings and more. It's easy to understand and is user-friendly, which is the case with other Samsung devices.

In our testing of the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors and dealt with dog hair (on carpet) quite well, clearing up 86 percent of it. However, it didn't do particularly well at avoiding taller objects like cords and socks which was a disappointment. It's priced higher than other models that we tested, and this could be a problem for some buyers.

The app lets you access the camera onboard of the smart vacuum. You can also set up live streaming from the robot's cleaning area. This feature lets you to check in on your pets or children while you are away. The dustbin and the filter can be cleaned to ensure an easy, quick clean-up. The Jet Bot AI+ also comes with a clean station that's self-emptying to keep the robot's dustbin clean and optimizes suction power for each cleaning.

6. Black & Decker best robot vacuum for the money Vacuum

Black and Decker robots are designed specifically for flooring made of hard wood. They come with a wide cleaning path and an extra-large dustbin that holds 2X more debris than competitors to keep the area clean for the longest time. The app also allows you to personalize the LED lights on the top of the vacuum by using different colors, so that you can easily tell what areas it's focusing on or where it's got stuck.

The app also makes it easy to steer the robot manually in the event of need. For instance my living room rug has a darkly colored border that can trip up some of the other robots I've tried. The HRV 425BL however, continued to move across the border without registering the edge. The ability to program a cleaning schedule for each week is a time-saving convenience.
