Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet style of previous albums and was a stronger, more consistent effort that had an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard work was also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on previous recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live show that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The studio album came out a few months later, and the group went on a long-distance tour to promote the album. In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a double album titled Then and Now. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
