Item upgrades are a common and important way to improve the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can be a good source of additional damage and more AD or even more affixes.

Rare-grade equipment is usually superior to modernized Common or Magic equipment due to their high demands.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both armor and weapon items. They increase the effectiveness of the item they're attached to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of the game and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. They can also be salvaged by using a specialist or higher salvage kits to recover upgrades from the items.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it is able to absorb. A piece of armor upgraded to its highest upgrade level will increase its ability to absorb damage. It is important to keep in mind that this will increase the weight of the armor, so it must be more heavy.

There are several different types of armor upgrades available in the game. Each has a different impact. For instance, certain upgrades will give the armor a certain amount of additional health points, while others make it stronger and lighter. The kind of armor upgrade an item can receive will be indicated by the name of the upgrade as shown in the table below.

Some of the upgrades also require magic or a combination of technology and magic, which are identified by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table below. Additionally, some upgrades require charges to use, which is identified by an "Charges" entry in the table below. These charges are continuously updated or never expire depending on the upgrade.

Iron Ore is the cheapest way to upgrade your armor. It can be found by exploring and looting small chests. Titanium is more expensive, however, it is available at the smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, like the Reforge and the Hot Potato Books, can only be applied to high-level armor pieces. These upgrades can give players a significant boost in stats, and are well worth the investment.

The player should be aware that upgrading a piece up to the maximum upgrade level will increase its defense value. However, it will also decrease its agility and its speed. It is not recommended to upgrade armor beyond +9. The boost in defense generally isn't worth the weight and power expenses of the upgrades.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players the ability to improve certain aspects of their weapon. For instance an upgrade could increase the damage dealt by shotgun shells or the accuracy of a rifle that snipes. Some weapons also have special upgrades that improve their innate characteristics. They include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and reduces the risk of overheating of the weapon) and Kinetic Coils (increases projectile acceleration for more damage).

The majority of upgrades to weapons require one of three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons and a whetblade to apply. They can be gained by completing Side Quests or by killing a certain amount of monsters and bosses.

To upgrade the weapon, equipment set piece or Whetblade you need to visit the NPC [ArmorBoboko. Boboko located in Central Flarine, and pay her an upgrade fee that is a certain amount of Bars. The higher the upgrade level, the more bars are required to complete it. The cost of the upgrades will be lower if have more than one of the upgrade materials.

In Chapter 2: Season 5 the way you upgrade your weapon and equipment sets has changed. Prior to Chapter 2 Season 5 you could upgrade your weapon or equipment by paying a certain amount of Bars. You could continue doing this until you reached a maximum upgrade level for your equipment or weapon, following which the upgrades would be reset.

You can still do this, however, the process is high on RNG and low on agency. Instead, you're better off going to the stores and buying gear with low upgrade levels, but excellent base scores and stat distributions. These items will have a greater chance of granting you the highest level of advantages and benefits.

To level up quicker, players usually prioritise upgrading their weapons. Players should also upgrade the weapons their squadmates use to boost their strength. Shepard for instance, should upgrade the M92F in order to unlock the Beretta M93R. This will make the weapon more useful when used in conjunction with biotic specialists such as Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels can be used to improve the stats of a character or to provide additional effects in weapons and armor. They can be created using a process called jewelry crafting, where you combine a gem and several chemicals at a table. The higher the grade of the gem, the better its secondary effect. These reagents are obtained in the world through Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and occasionally by salvaging Legendary equipment. You can also purchase them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.

The Jeweler can enhance the quality of the gem in stages that range from Crude up to Royal. The boosts to stats will differ depending on the level the jewel is in when it's inserted into jewelry, weapons, or gear.

The Jeweler is able to create all tiers of gems, except for the rare and legendary ones, which you must attain a certain level to get. Like other upgrade components jewels can be swapped by a different identical jewel without damaging it. However you can only swap out one jewel in a piece of equipment once.

The use of more jewels in a movement will make it more smooth and is usually done for aesthetic reasons. In addition to enhancing performance, the jewels create a surface that is harder than steel, so the repeated friction from pivots doesn't cause damage as easily.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs that can enhance the look of your weapons and shields. These glyphs give a slight boost and can be freely traded, but they're not guaranteed to show up as loot. Glyphs, like jewelry, can be upgraded at the Jeweler to exchange Scattered Crystals and gold. Glyphs can also be taken out and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, like traits and aegis, aren't swappable and can only be recovered using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them using a Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets can be used to give your character a variety of small, but valuable, advantages. They can be obtained in the starter areas as loot or personal story rewards from vendors, or by completing road interactions. They can also be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinket that a player will unlock is the cloak. It gives a small, but useful bonus in speed of movement and the ability to escape. Then, they can acquire rings, amulets, and necklaces in the same fashion to how the player acquires armor and weapons. Each piece of equipment has a slot for an upgrade that is either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades offer smaller bonuses and can be put into any type of equipment however, jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded, and is only compatible with certain types of trinkets.

These trinkets can provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't fighting. This allows the hero to be more effective when not active, and can also help make up for a lack of a strong team or any slots in the talent tree that normally are filled with hero's ideal statistics.

As a rule, trinket upgrades should prioritize BiS (Best in Slot) items that you aren't likely to replace anytime soon. Then, you should consider any items with desirable stats that aren't as important as the iLevel for the item upgrading that is to be upgraded. This is particularly true if an Item Upgrade has multiple stats that you'd like to upgrade, as it's usually better to upgrade just one crucial stat than two subpar ones.

Jungle players often upgrade their yellow trinket to a red one at the start of the game. Top and mid players on the other hand will pick a pink or green ward, depending on the game's matchup. These choices can impact the hero's ability to manage the map.

In addition to the things mentioned above, players may also discover a variety of other trinkets in the game in the form of trophies and awards. They can be obtained by completing certain milestones in the story. For instance, completing the main quest for a chapter or beating an opponent.
